Fine line script word on the wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a hand and wrist showing a small, delicate word written in thin black script that reads live. The linework is fine and even, with a slightly tapered stroke and no shading. Gold rings and stacked silver and leather bangles sit on the arm beside it against a dark jacket sleeve.

Dear Tomasz,

The gold leaf on the Ashby Street fascia lifted again in the wet, so the bakery now says only BAK, and Mrs Pryce has asked me twice whether I was drunk when I painted it. Come back and fix it yourself. Use the size in the blue tin, not the cheap one from the chandler's, which goes tacky by noon and ruins a morning's work.
Yesterday I was up the ladder with the small sable, finishing the lettering on the cemetery gate for the Halloran family. They wanted a line beneath the name and asked for something plain. I did not plan what came out. I wrote it in the hairline your granddad taught me, a stroke that thins at every turn like a wave drawing back off sand. The word was LIVE, and I had the brush loaded before I had decided anything. Mrs Halloran watched from the path for a long while, then asked whether I could make the L a touch taller.
I told her the L was already right. Tall letters are for shouting across a street. The kind ones are said quietly, with a hand that does not press too hard on the page. She nodded as if I had settled an argument she had been having with herself since March.
Bring the blue tin when you come, and bring yourself too. The window needs doing before the frost, and I would rather you learned the hairline from my hand than from your granddad's old drawings, which have started to curl at the corners like the leaf does.
