Treble clef with a heart in its curls
Colour · Flash
A solid teal treble clef drawn as a bold silhouette, with a heart shape formed by the inner curves of the clef. The linework is smooth and filled with a single flat colour, with no shading or texture. The design sits centrally on a plain white background with generous space around it.

You have the pen in your hand before the band has finished tuning, because Mr Fenwick wants the parts copied by Thursday and you are the only one in Hollin Pit who can draw a treble clef without it looking like a dropped sock. The chapel hall smells of coal smoke and Brasso. Outside, the winding gear at Number Four turns over and over, and the cornets are flat again.

Your clefs are known along the valley. Still, Dennis Oates, who plays euphonium and cannot read a bar of anything, says a copyist should keep to the printed lines and stop showing off. You do not argue. You draw the bowl, then the loop, and where the curls meet you let them lean together until they make a small heart on the page. Nobody notices for months. Then the band sets off for the regional contest at Brierley with the new march, and the adjudicator holds the score up to the window.
It is his wife who spots it, and she says so across the car park while you are loading the bass drum. Your face goes hot. Fenwick takes the part from her, looks at it for a long time, and sets it on the stand without a word. You play the solo that afternoon with your hands shaking and the teal ink sitting on the page in front of you, the heart small and stubborn in the curl.
The band comes third. On the bus home Fenwick sits beside you and says the march was the best thing on the stand, and that the heart was a daft idea but he has never once had a copy come back with a smudge on it. The next Thursday there is a fresh manuscript waiting on your chair, blank, ruled, and a note in his square capitals: DRAW IT AGAIN.
