Treble clef with music staff drawing
Fine line · Black and grey · Flash
A hand-drawn treble clef is shown on cream paper, with its curling strokes merged into a staff of wavy lines carrying small musical notes at the top and left. Three dots sit to the right of the clef, and the lines use dense hatching and shading to give the clef volume. The design is photographed at an angle on a wooden surface, with the drawing filling most of the frame.

The wire was still humming when I reached the top field, which meant the frost had got into the gateposts again and pulled everything tight. Dad strung five strands between those posts the winter before I was born, and in hard weather they sang when the wind came over the hill. He used to walk the line with a tin of staples and a claw hammer, tapping each strand until it rang true, and he told me the hum was a tune nobody had written down yet.

I found his pencil in the tack room, wedged behind the feed sacks where it had always been. Inside an old almanac were sheets of feed-merchant paper ruled into five lines, and down the margin he had drawn a treble clef that curled like a dropped ribbon, with notes climbing its tail and three round dots beside the loop, as if he meant to come back and finish the rests. The ink had gone grey with damp. I stood there with a ewe bawling behind me and felt the whole farm lean towards that page.
Back at the gate I plucked the top strand with my thumbnail. It gave a low, bruised note, the one below answered, then the wind lifted and the rest of the wires took up a phrase I almost knew. I wrote it on the back of a fertiliser receipt, badly, with my tongue between my teeth the way he used to. Three notes, a long rest, then the same three going up.
When the light went I tightened the bottom wire one more turn so it would keep singing into spring. The lamp in the barn window made a small round dot on the snow, and I thought he would have liked that, a note held just long enough to be heard.
