Tree of life design with patterned leaves

Botanical · Black and grey · Flash

A tree with a full canopy of leaves, each filled with fine decorative patterns, rises from a curved trunk and roots that sweep into swirling tendrils. A dotted circle frames the whole design, and the linework is precise with stippled dots and hatching used for shading. The drawing is in black ink on white paper, with no colour and a centred composition.

Maud had been told the elm would come down on Thursday, so she sat on the churchyard wall with two pens, the thick one for the outline and the fine one for everything else, and tried to finish before the saw arrived.

Each leaf had to carry its own pattern. She borrowed them from things the village had already lost: the lace on Mrs Pardoe's wedding veil, the blue tiles of the dairy floor, the scrolled iron of the lych gate that rusted off in the flood of '52. She stippled the shadows and hatched where the light slid underneath the branches. Children gathered on the grass to watch and asked why the roots curled like hair in a bath. "So it can hold on," she said, though she had no idea whether that was true.

On Thursday the men came with the saw and a foreman called Tully, who stopped at the wall and looked at the page for a long time. Then he sat down beside her, which took him longer than it should have. His mother had slept under that tree the night before she married, he said, and he had never told anyone that. He waved the men back to the lorry and told them to have their tea.

Maud pinned the sheet to the lych gate that evening. The dotted circle caught the last of the sun, and the leaves threw their small, careful shadows onto the stone. The elm is still standing. Nobody in the village can copy the patterns on its leaves, and nobody has tried.
