Tree, paisley, floret and starburst motif chart
Black and grey · Flash
A four by four chart of hand drawn motifs in black ink on a pale background, with columns labelled tree, paisley, floret and starburst. Each row shows the same motif at a different level of detail, from simple single strokes and dots in the first row to dense, filled designs with fine internal patterning in the fourth. The linework is bold and even, and the images are laid out in evenly spaced coloured frames with a small caption along the bottom edge.

Hold your hand out flat, the old woman said, and I will show you what the dot wanted. It was only ink then, a single black thought on the stone of the high pass, and the wind came up from the valley and asked it what it meant to become. The dot had no answer, so the wind took it up in its teeth and carried it three days east, to where the shepherds of Ardcoll kept their flocks in the bend of the river.

There, a widow named Maren Thorsby was grinding madder root in a wooden bowl. She saw the dot land on her doorstep and, being a practical woman, she drew a ring around it so it would have something to hold on to. One ring became two, then a crown of short rays, and the dot grew bold enough to ask for more. She cut a sprig of rowan and drew it up from the threshold, and the stem split into fronds, and the fronds curled at their feet like the tails of sleeping cats.
Each spring the dot came back over the pass with new ideas. It wanted petals, so it became a floret with eight blunt petals and a heart of spirals. It wanted a seed, so a paisley bent its back like a raindrop falling the wrong way and filled itself with little dashes like grain in a sack. Every version was a little more crowded than the last, and the shepherds argued over whether it was finished.
It was never finished, said the old woman, and she pressed her thumb to the child's palm, leaving a clean black dot. Tomorrow you draw the ring. Then the ring will want a spoke, and the spoke will want company.
