Tree, paisley, floret and starburst motif sheet
Black and grey · Flash
A four by four grid of small black ink motifs on cream squares, with column labels for tree, paisley, floret and starburst. Each column moves from simple to more detailed versions, using fine curling lines, leaf shapes, a teardrop outline and layered petals. The motifs are drawn in black line only, with no shading, and each sits in a coloured border that separates the columns.

The ink dried faster than Morven liked, so she kept the lid of the jar under her thumb while Ailsa worked the nib across the card. "Start with the curl," she said. "Everything on this sheet begins as a curl or a dot, and if you cannot make a dot sit still you will never make a flower."

The mill had shut its looms the winter before, but the pattern books still came over on the ferry in sacks, and the old ones were the best. Morven had cut shawl borders from them for thirty years: tree sprigs that bent like bracken, paisley drops that swelled and split, florets that opened in rings. She had pinned this sheet above the bench so the girl could see the whole ladder at once, each square climbing into the next.
Ailsa wanted to skip to the bottom row. The big starburst, rays spilling out from a boss, looked like something worth the afternoon. Morven took the pen out of her hand and made her go back to the dot in the top corner, then the small ring, then the eight-petalled bloom, one stroke at a time, until the girl's wrist stopped shaking.
When the light came in low through the window, Ailsa had filled every square on the card. Morven turned it over to check the back and found a single black dot, neat as a full stop, where the girl had tested the nib before she began. She left it there. It was the only mark on the sheet that had been made without anyone's help.
