Tree roots and peace sign on a wrist
Forearm · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo shows bare, branching tree roots wrapping up the forearm, with a black peace symbol set among them. A green, leafy form sits near the wrist, shaded in soft greens and greys. The linework and shading are fine and the composition is angled diagonally across the lower arm, with woven bracelets in the foreground.

The fence between Tom Aske's barley and his brother's pasture had stood for thirty years, and the old ash that leaned over it had long since stopped caring whose side it grew on. Its roots ran under both fields like cold pipes, bare and knotted, and nobody in the valley could remember a season when the brothers had passed a word across the wire.

Their grandmother had nailed a black iron ring to the gatepost, three spokes wheeling out from its middle, and told them it was a sign for travellers that the house was safe. Neither brother had ever asked what she meant by safe. When the February gale came up the valley, it took the gatepost first, then the wire, and by morning the ash had heaved half its roots clean out of the clay.
Tom found Ned already out in the mud with a spade, cutting at the same root from the other side. They worked until their hands bled through their gloves. Where the iron ring had dropped into the hollow between two roots, a green shoot had come up through the cold clay, soft and furled, as if the tree had kept something back all those years for whichever of them looked down first.
They did not rebuild the fence. Ned brought round a loaf on the Sunday and Tom poured him a cup of cider, and the ash went on leaning over both fields with its roots knotted under each kitchen floor. When the wind came up the valley now, each brother heard the other's door bang, and went out to see if it needed fixing.
