Triangle, script letters and 508 on a foot
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A small black tattoo sits on the top of a bare foot, showing an open triangle followed by the cursive letters c and f joined to the numerals 508. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the ink is solid black against the skin. The photograph is taken close up at a slight angle, with the foot filling the frame and a soft, blurred background.

Tomas Ure had kept the signal hut at Carrow Gap for nine winters, and he knew the sound of the wire before any message came: a thin hum that rose when snow sat on the line. That night it hummed like a kettle left too long on the range. He wrote down the groups as they arrived, five figures at a time, and the last one made no sense. The sender had drawn a small open triangle in the margin, then c, then f, then 508.

His father had been a surveyor and had taught him that a triangle marked a trig point, an iron pillar bolted to the rock where the whole valley could be read at a glance. The letters c and f he knew from the farm ledgers, short for Fennick, the holding under the cairn. Tomas unfolded the map under the lamp. Grid 508 ran straight up the north face, where the drifts were deepest and nobody walked in February.
He took the lantern and the coil of rope from the peg by the door. Halfway up he found a boot print filled with fresh snow, and beside it a tin cup set upright on a flat stone, as though someone had wanted to be certain he would see it. Inside was a folded slip of paper in pencil: Still here. Come by the trig before the light goes.
He reached the pillar as the cloud tore open. Far below, the farm windows glowed small and yellow, and he understood that the message had never been meant for the wire at all. He wrote the hour on his cuff so he would remember it, then started down, slowly, with the lantern held out in front of him.
