Infinity symbol with red heart on a finger
Fine line · Hand · Mixed · Photo
A small infinity symbol drawn in thin black linework sits on the side of a finger, with a solid red heart filling the left loop. The lines are fine and even, and the shading is minimal, so the design reads as simple and flat. The tattoo is centred on a close crop of the hand, with a dark blue background and warm skin tones.

Dear Tomasz, the Big Wheel stopped at Hallam Green again last night with a lad stuck at the top for forty minutes. Your mother had to be talked down from the generator shed. I told her it was only the cable, which is true, and she didn't believe me, which is also true.

I've been sorting the old box of ride signs since we packed up in Carlisle. Under a sheet of spare canvas I found the panel Eddie painted for the Figure Eight before his chest got bad. He drew the track as a sideways eight in black lines pulled tight, then couldn't decide where the heart should go, so he put it in the left loop, where the lamps hit first when the cars swing round. He said a heart held the eight shut, otherwise the cars would drift off the edge of the tarmac and nobody would fetch them back.
The panel is in the back of the van now, wrapped in your father's old flannel. I keep thinking about whether to hang it on the stall or post it to you in Leeds. You always said the Figure Eight was the only ride that never ended where it started, and I used to tell you that was rubbish, that every ride comes back to the gate. Turns out I was wrong about one thing.
Eddie's grandson is driving the dodgem van to Scarborough on Thursday, and I'm putting the panel on the seat beside him. If the lights come on at the far end of the field, you'll know we've made it round again. Love, Maggie
