Infinity symbol with anchor on wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A small fine line infinity symbol in black ink sits on the inner wrist, with a turquoise anchor overlapping its left loop. A tiny turquoise heart outline sits beneath the crossing point. The thin, even linework is set against pale skin on a dark background, with the design centred in the frame.

The ferry from Brightlow Pier made the same crossing eleven times a day, and my father said that was the only kind of infinity a man could honestly promise. He ran the Kittiwake for thirty-one years between the slipway at Hendra and the old lighthouse on Pennick Rock, and I was his deckhand from the age of twelve, coiling rope that smelt of diesel and gull mess.

The anchor was the trouble. It was dropped in the wrong place one foggy March, snagged on a lost pot line, and the chain went taut and held the boat sideways while the tide came in. Dad cut it free with the hacksaw he kept in the wheelhouse, and the anchor went down into the silt by the sea wall, where it still lies. He never replaced it. He said a boat that could stop anywhere would never learn to keep to its route.
The autumn Mam left, she stood on the slipway with a blue scarf knotted at her throat and waved at every crossing, eleven times a day, until the scarf was a speck and then nothing at all. Dad logged the crossings in a black ledger. Beside each one he drew a small heart in pencil, which I thought soft of him until I found the page, and then I thought it was the bravest thing in the book.
The last winter, the council sold the Kittiwake for scrap and I took her out alone for one final run. I went out to the Rock, swung her round in one long loop the way he taught me, and brought her back to the slip. I tied the line twice round the bollard, the way he liked it, and let the boat rock on her own short circle while I stood on the wet boards and waved at nobody.
