Tribal finger bands on interlocked hands
Hand · Black and grey · Photo
Two hands are held together with fingers interlaced, and each shows a small black tribal-style band tattoo wrapped around a finger. The linework is bold and curving with solid black areas and thin swirling strokes. The nails have a silver and black striped nail art pattern, and the background is a blurred indoor room with chairs.

Nell had bent wire for the fairground for thirty-one years, swing-boat chains, the cages of the big wheel, the scrolled brackets that held up the tent lamps. The last of the travelling show was packing up in the field behind the gasworks, and the man from the council wanted the ground clear by Friday. She was sweeping iron filings off the bench when the two lads from the dodgems came in, both smelling of diesel and cheap aftershave, and asked her for something that wouldn't come off.

"Nothing gold," said the taller one, Danny. "We've no money for gold." His friend Sol kept looking at the floor. They wanted two bands, one each, to wear on the same finger on the same night, because they were walking out of the field together before the lorries left and nobody was going to stop them. Nell asked whether they knew what they were doing. Danny said they knew exactly what they were doing, which was not an answer, but she had heard worse from better men.
She drew the pattern on the back of a feed sack with a carpenter's pencil: a heavy black curl that swelled and thinned like a hook of smoke, with fine swirls peeling off it like the scrollwork on a steam organ. She ground the thick part down with the emery wheel until it went matt and dark, and she left the thin strokes bright. When she wrapped the first ring round Danny's finger the wire was warm from her palm, and he went quiet, the way men do when they are somewhere they didn't expect to be.
On Friday the field was bare grass and tyre ruts. The wheel had gone on the Thursday night with its cages swinging. Nell found a postcard a fortnight later, a picture of the sea at Blackpool, with two hands on the front, fingers laced, and a single line on the back in pencil: the bands held. She put it on the bench beside the offcut she had kept, the last curl of wire from the afternoon, and it was the only thing in that whole yard still bent exactly the way she had meant it to be.
