Tribal fox on upper back
Blackwork · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A fox sits with its head turned to one side, its large curling tail wrapping beneath it. The design is outlined in bold black linework, with the body and tail filled with swirling ornamental shapes. Only black ink is used against the skin tone, and the fox is centred on the frame with the top edge showing fabric.

The tide had taken the second bell buoy again, and Maud Harrow was still arguing with the harbourmaster about who would pay for a new one when the fox came down the slipway. It was thin that winter, ribs showing under a coat gone the colour of wet slate, and it did not run from the gulls. It sat on the bottom step with its head turned to one side, as if listening to the water rather than to her.

Her grandmother used to say the foxes of the Skerry Coast were the sea's own, lent out to the land for a season and called back when the herring went deep. Maud had thought this nonsense at nine and had thought it nonsense at twenty, but she had never seen a fox sit so still beside a boat, with its tail laid out behind it like a second sail, spiralled and dark with the old ink of the tide-marks.
She fetched the rope she had been saving for the buoy and tied a bowline with numb fingers. The fox watched every knot. When she finished, it stood, stretched, and walked out along the mooring line as though it were a footpath, and it did not fall into the grey water. Behind it the sea lay flat in long curls, and the tail seemed to trail out across the surface and keep going.
The buoy came back on the morning tide, red and sound, and nobody in the village could say who had hauled it in. Maud kept the rope. Some nights, when the wind came off the Skerry, she swore she could see a ribbon of tail-shaped light lying out over the bay, and somewhere past it, a small dark shape looking back to see whether she was still watching.
