Tribal heart and scroll border designs
Black and grey · Flash
The image shows three separate border designs stacked vertically, each built from bold black heart shapes joined by swirling scrolls and sweeping tapered lines. The top and bottom borders are symmetrical strips of hearts and curls, while the central design is a wider band with a heart at its centre flanked by ornamental loops. The artwork is solid black ink on a plain white background with no shading or colour.

The ledger for the Kestrel's Rest chandlery was kept in two inks, black for what was owed and red for what was paid, and by the third week of March Maud Tallis had run out of black. She sat at the counter with the lamp turned low and listed the debts in pencil instead, the way her father had taught her, so that a man could rub out his shame if he paid up quickly. Most of them did. Tom Rennick from the ferry had left a coil of tarred rope against a promise of a bottle of gin, and the gin had already been drunk in the back room by the men who never intended to pay for it.

The bell over the door went at half past six. It was a sailor she did not know, young, with a seabag over one shoulder and a letter folded so often it had gone soft as cloth. He wanted a pair of brass hinges for a sea chest and would not say where he was bound. She sold him the hinges at cost and wrote nothing down, which her father would have called foolishness.
After he had gone she found the scroll he had left on the counter, a rough drawing of three curling borders, hearts pinched between swirls like knots in a bell rope. Written underneath in a careful hand: for the one who keeps the books. She folded it into the ledger at the page with Tom's debt and, for the first time that spring, took out the black ink and wrote something in it.
