Tribal penguin and heart designs

Black and grey · Flash

The collage shows several versions of a tribal design: a heart formed by two facing penguins, plus a single standing penguin. The designs use bold black solid shapes with white negative space and curled, spiral detailing inside the bodies. The layout is a white and pale green background with the drawings arranged at different sizes, with no skin visible.

Hold still and I'll tell you about Mags Treloar and the two penguins on the Skerry. You'll not find it on any chart, but the old keeper at Gull Point knew every rock of it. The light stood on the north end then, and the birds came up out of the sea every spring, stiff-backed and solemn, marching the shingle like a row of ministers.

Her husband, Tam, took the boat out to the Skerry one March and didn't come back. The sea was grey as a slate roof that week. Mags climbed the tower every night after and turned the lamp by hand when the clockwork stuck, because she said the ships wouldn't wait on a widow's grief. Two penguins came up the rocks below the lamp room that spring, one bigger, one small with a crooked wing, and they stood side by side at the foot of the stair as if they'd been posted there.

She fed them herring and talked to them about Tam, and they listened the way birds listen, all head and no judgement. By midsummer the small one had learned to waddle up the steps behind her. The bigger one never came inside. It would stand at the rail facing the little one, and where their two white bellies met, the curl of the swell wrapped round them both, and you could have sworn the water bent to keep them close.

When the autumn gales came, the keeper's boy found the big penguin dead on the rocks, facing the tower. Mags carried it up to the lamp room and set the small one beside it, and the light went round all that night, sweeping over two birds that had made a heart of themselves on the floor. Some say that's why the Skerry light still turns the way it does, and why the boats coming home past it never quite go down.
