Orange phoenix design with heart-shaped feathers
Colour · Flash
A stylised phoenix in flight, with wings spread and head turned to the right, drawn in bold flowing outlines and decorative curls. The long tail feathers taper downwards and end in two small heart shapes. The design uses a gradient from deep orange at the top to pale yellow at the bottom, set against a plain white background.

The net loft went up on a Tuesday, and by Thursday you were still raking grey ash out of the tar bucket with a lolly stick, because nobody in Porthennis had the heart to tell you the bucket was finished. The smell got into your hair and stayed there through the week. Gulls stood on the slipway looking offended by the whole business.

Old Anselm Trewin, who had painted boat names along that harbour wall for fifty years, came down on the Friday with a tin of paint and a brush worn to a point. He didn't ask how you were holding up. He tipped the tin, showed you the colour, and said the skiff from the wreck pile needed a name before the spring tides, and that you could decide what it was. You asked why he wasn't doing it himself. He said his hands had gone the way of the tar bucket.
So you painted a bird. It came out of the brush wrong at first, all wing and no bird, so you stopped fighting it and let the curls run where they wanted. Red at the crest, the colour of the last embers in the loft. Orange down the back. The paint thinned as you worked along the tail and went pale as weak tea, and you didn't mind, because that was where the ash had been thickest. At the very end you put two small hearts, one above the other, because your grandmother used to say that nothing burns down all the way if somebody still keeps a heart in it.
On the morning of the launch the tide came up the harbour steps and lifted the skiff off the cradle. Anselm stood beside you with his hands in his pockets. The bird on the hull caught the low sun, and for a moment the whole quay looked like it was on fire, and nobody called for the bucket.
