Sit nearer the range, you lot, and mind the kettle, because this is the winter the Haddow ewes went up the scar and never came down. My grandfather said it was the year the wolf came back, and he was not a man who said things for effect. Snow had sat on Crook Fell for six weeks. The dogs wouldn't go past the top gate, and the lamb pens stood empty because nobody could carry feed up the lane.

Then one morning there was a track in the drift that wasn't a fox's or a hare's. Long strides, and every few yards the snow was scorched where something had passed with its shoulders hunched, the fur along its neck standing up in tongues of violet and rose, like the last of a fire on wet coal. Folk said it was frost catching the light. My grandfather said it was the wolf's own colour, and that a beast like that had no need to hide.

He followed it to the old sheepfold, and there were the ewes, all eleven, huddled and quiet, the wolf lying across the gap in the wall with its black head on its paws. It didn't snarl. It only turned its long face to him and waited, the way a neighbour waits at a gate for you to remember what you owe.

He carried the last ewe down on his back that night, and the wolf walked beside him to the bottom gate, then stopped where the snow gave way to the yard. It looked back once, the purple light running down its ruff like river ice cracking, and went up into the dark. We never saw it again. But every February the ewes come down the fell on their own, as if someone had told them the road was open.
