Triforce crest with watercolour splashes on an arm
Geometric · Other · Mixed · Photo
A solid black emblem built from a triangle of three smaller triangles, flanked by wing-like rays and a lower pointed motif, sits at the centre of the design. Behind it, loose splashes of red, blue and green ink fade outwards in a rough circle, with the black linework crisp against the softer colour. The photograph is a close, straight-on view of the skin with the tattoo filling most of the frame.

Mara had been told the crest was older than the sea wall, and that nobody living had drawn it true. The wings on the lintel of the Gantry Hall had flaked to grey, and the council wanted it gone before the festival. She climbed the scaffold with a tin of black lacquer, a brush the width of a finger, and a bag of pigment her uncle had mixed from kelp ash and copper dust.

The three triangles were the hard part. Each one had to point at the same star, her uncle said, or the gate would never open for anyone. She measured twice, then a third time, pressing a chalk line into the stone with her thumb. Below her the dye-works had started their evening shift, and the vats gave off a sweet rot and a shiver of colour on the wind. Someone shouted her name from the yard, and she didn't turn round.
When the black was done, she sat on the plank with the dregs of the kelp pot in her lap and let the spatter take her. Red from the madder vat, blue from the indigo trough, green from the bitter leaves. She flicked the brush so the colour threw itself outward in a rough circle, the way spray goes over a breakwater in a gale. The crisp black stood out sharp against the soft, running hues.
At dusk the council man came with his clipboard and stopped under the arch. He read the crest, then the splashes, then her face, and said nothing for a long time. "It's not the original," he said at last. "No," said Mara. "It's the one that lets the boats in." He signed the form without looking at it.
