The chain men had been gone two days when Aunt Marjorie came up the Hause with her paint box strapped to a pack frame, swearing at the wet. She said the triangle on the col was the only honest thing in the valley, three pencil lines that didn't care what the weather was doing. I didn't believe her until she unstoppered a pan of violet and laid it over the cloud coming off Scar Fell, and the cloud seemed to take the colour and keep it.

We worked the afternoon out like that. She washed the sky in pink where the sun had broken through over the far ridge, then blue down into the tarn so the water and the air couldn't be told apart. I sat on the cairn with the survey ledger open on my knees, copying the bearings in a hand that kept sliding off the page. Every time I looked up the paint had moved. Rain was coming in sideways, and the wash ran into the bracken until the purple gave up its edges.

At dusk she set the brush down and asked what I thought of it. I said the triangle was crooked, that the ink had gone over the line on the east side. She laughed and said that was the trouble with fixed points: they only ever agreed with where they stood. Then she peeled the wet sheet off the board and folded it into my ledger between the bearings, and I carried the mountain down the other side, cold and blue and pink, the three black lines still holding the place open for whoever came back to look.
