Prism and rainbow animals on ribs
Ribs · Mixed · Photo
A black outlined triangle with dotted speckles sits on the side of the ribs, with a band of rainbow colour spilling out from one corner. Small stylised animals in red, orange, yellow, green, blue and grey follow the beam across the skin. Bold outlines and soft colour fills give a clean, illustrative look against a plain, evenly lit background.

The miller at Hollin Bridge had no use for the glass his wife brought back from the autumn fair, so he gave it to their daughter to hang in the kitchen window. It was a three-cornered thing, heavy as a river stone and clear as well water, and when the noon sun came through it the whitewashed wall broke into colours. Nobody in the village could say where the colours came from, and nobody asked the miller twice.

Every day Ada sat under the window and watched the light. First a red hare ran across the flour sacks. A yellow fox chased it, then a green heron, then a blue otter, and last of all a grey hound with no collar, which walked slowly and kept looking back at the door as if it had been called and was not sure who had called. The animals never stayed past the sill. Ada learned that if she put her hand into the beam the hare would stop and sniff her fingers, cold as spring water.
The year the river rose, the mill race burst and the good stones went under. The miller came in soaked to the knees and sat by the fire without speaking. Ada took the glass down, carried it to the bank, and held it up to a sky with no sun in it at all. The animals came anyway, pouring out over the brown water, and the grey hound stayed behind on the bank and lay down with its nose on Ada's boot.
They still say the hound comes to the weir when the light is low. A woman in a miller's apron walks the bank at dusk with a stone in her palm that is not quite a stone, and a yellow fox runs ahead of her to show the way home.
