Triple moon tattoo on an arm

Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A small black tattoo of three linked crescent moons sits on the arm, with thin, even linework and no shading. The background shows a cream dreamcatcher with white feathers and black beads, which is a physical object and not part of the tattoo. The composition is a close, slightly angled shot with soft, bright light.

On the third night the moon refused to keep its shape, and you knew something in the wood had gone wrong. Your grandmother's ledger lay open on the kitchen table beside the cold tea, its columns of phases written in her cramped hand: waxing, full, waning, dark. Beyond the window the forest at the edge of Hollin Bottom stood black against a sky with no moon in it at all.

You took the lamp and the tin of white thread down the lane, past the last cottage where the dogs had stopped barking weeks ago. The path into the beeches was marked by hoops of willow hung from low branches, each strung with a loose net of cord and a few grey feathers, each with a bead of black jet at its centre. Your grandmother had made them. Every spring she replaced the ones the wind had taken, and every autumn the village ignored her warnings that the wood did not care for empty hoops.

Halfway along, the path forked around a stump where three crescents had been cut into the bark, one waxing, one full, one waning. You knelt and laid the thread across them and mended the cord the way she had taught you, knot by careful knot. The wind dropped. Somewhere deeper in the trees a voice began counting the phases back, slowly, as though relearning them.

When the last knot tightened, the sky above the beeches split silver and the moon rose thin as a fingernail, exactly where the ledger said it should be. You walked home without looking back, because she had told you never to look back at the wood. When you reached the kitchen the ledger was still open, and a new line had been written beneath her last entry, in a hand that was not quite yours yet.
