The rain had been falling on the market at Brackenmoor since morning, and the stallholders had stopped pretending it would pass. "The last tree is going," she said, setting a tuft of pink wool on the counter. "The men from the valley had their saws out at dawn. The fluff at the top was still warm when I picked it."

He turned the wool over with a finger. It gave back the grey light the way a plum does. Nobody in Brackenmoor had seen a tree like that in living memory, only in the carters' songs, which said that a town could not mend itself while its trees were falling, and that the world only held together unless someone was stubborn enough to stand under the last of them.

Tomas took his knife, cut a length of his finest cord, and tied the wool to the end of it. Then he walked up the hill in the rain with Ide behind him, and they sat under the thin stump until the saws went quiet and the men gave up and went home for their supper.

The next spring, a single pink head came up through the mud where the stump had been. Ide said it was the cord that did it. Tomas said it was the rain. Neither of them was wrong, and the carters still sing it that way.
