Dreamcatcher tattoo on the inner wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small dreamcatcher with a circular web and three feathers hanging from its base is tattooed on the inner wrist. The linework is thin and black, with light shading on the feathers and a soft grey background. The hand is raised in a fist-like pose against a plain, softly lit wall, with the tattoo placed centrally in the frame.

Nell had been up since three, scraping the last of the starter from the bottom of the tub, when she noticed the draught creeping under the back door. It was the same draught that had kept her awake all week, and it was the reason her gran's dreamcatcher now hung above the proving racks, a ring of willow and cotton web with three grey feathers knotted to its base.

Gran had brought it back from a market in Leeds years ago, when the shop still iced birthday cakes for half the street. "It catches the bad dreams," she had said, tapping the web with one floury knuckle, "and lets the good ones drop through the middle." Nell had laughed then. Now she stood with her hands dusted white, watching the feathers lift and settle each time the oven ticked.
By five the windows had turned from black to the colour of weak tea. Dev from the newsagent's came in for his usual split tin, stamping snow from his boots, and asked why she looked so pale. She told him about the bills stacked by the till, the landlord's letter, the cold patch on the ceiling. He nodded at the dreamcatcher and lifted one feather with a fingertip. "Your gran hung that for the rain, mind, not for you."
Nell drew the first tray from the oven. The crust crackled like a struck match, and the whole room filled with that warm, plain smell she had never once managed to bottle. Above her the web held nothing but a few drifting flakes of flour. She slid the loaves onto the cooling rack and left the dreamcatcher exactly where it was, because for once nothing in it needed catching.
