The lift has been broken since Easter, so you climb the stairs of Ashdown House with the ribbon folded small in your coat pocket, fourteen floors of cold concrete with the smell of somebody's Sunday roast seeping under every door. Halfway up the strip lights buzz and die, and you keep one hand on the rail, counting landings the way your nan used to count them for you when you were small enough to be carried.

The ribbon was hers. It came out of a biscuit tin full of hair grips and loose buttons, a pink satin bow she pinned to the back of her head every Friday for bingo at the community centre. When she moved into flat 14 in 1979 she tied a scrap of the same pink to the banister outside her door so the kids could find their way home in the dark. Nobody ever told you to keep it. You just did.

On the ninth floor a door is open a crack, and a small voice asks if you are the lady from the flats with the sweets. You are not, but you kneel anyway, and you tell her about the bow, and she decides it must go on the rail outside her own door so the stairs will know she lives there.

You loop the satin round the iron twice, pull the knot tight with your teeth, and step back. The bulb above flickers on. The bow sits there bright as a boiled sweet against the grey paint, and when the wind comes through the broken window below, it lifts both loops at once, as if someone on the stairs has waved.
