Twilight lettering and eyes on upper back
Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo
The photograph shows the upper back of a woman with short dark hair, seen from behind in a shop. The word twilight is written in a serif script across the upper back, with a pair of shaded eyes and brows beneath it. The ink is black and grey, with soft grey shading on the eyes, and the background of supermarket shelving and shoppers is out of focus.

Hold the lantern low, you tell yourself, the way Mrs Penhallow taught you, and the quay will not notice you coming. Porthkelly's harbour lamps have been lit by the same family for four generations, and the last of them, old Tom Garrow, left you the oil can, the tinderbox and a ledger whose final entry is a single word in his shaking hand: twilight. You didn't understand it until the evening the fog came in off the bay and the lamps went dark one by one, as if something was walking along the wall and pinching them out.

The second lamp you reach is the one above the fish market, and someone has painted a pair of eyes on its iron bracket, shaded grey where the rain has run them. They face the water. Tom never mentioned them, but you climb anyway, and the wick catches on the first strike, and the light goes out across the bay in one long, unhurried sweep. Out past the breakwater, a boat that had been drifting towards the Skerry turns its bow for home.
Afterwards you sit on the cold step and open the ledger. Under Tom's word you write the hour, the weather and the name of the boat, which you saw clearly though the fog swallowed everything else. Tomorrow the chandler will ask why the lamps were late, and you will tell her the truth: the eyes on the bracket were open, and they were looking the right way.
