Lettering · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A bare foot rests on grey fabric with a word tattoo reading twilight across the ankle and the top of the foot. The letters are rendered in dark blue-black ink with stylised vertical strokes crossing the lettering. Mara had until the last of the light to get the mules over the Halfway Col, and the sky above the scree was already turning the colour of wet slate. Her brother Tomas had gone ahead with the lantern, swearing in the dialect their grandmother used for goats. She counted the bells on the lead animal as they went, one clank for every stone the path gave back.

At the cairn where the track forked, the old marker had been painted with a row of upright strokes, the way shepherds marked safe ground under snow. Mara had never liked them. They looked like rain falling sideways through a word. Tonight they caught the dusk and held it, so the gaps between the strokes glowed the pale blue of a bruise. Tomas said it was only leftover tin paint from the mail van. She didn't argue.
They reached the saddle as the valley lights came on below, one farm at a time, like someone carrying a candle along a shelf. The mules stopped on their own at the crest. Mara unbuckled the last pack and found, under the wool, a tin box her mother had sealed with wax before the autumn sales. Inside was a folded note in her mother's square hand: the name of the pass, the hour, and a single line. Cross before the word goes dark.
She read it twice and laughed, because nobody had ever explained what the word meant, only the hour. Then she looked down at the cairn, where the last strokes had gone out, and understood the instruction was meant for whoever came after them. She tied the note to the lead mule's halter and let it take them down into the dark.
