Line drawn dog face on an ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A small tattoo of a dog's face sits on the ankle, drawn as a single continuous outline with two dot eyes and a filled dot nose. The linework is thin and even, and the design is shown in black ink against pale skin. The photograph is taken from a low angle, with the ankle and a dark, textured trainer filling the frame.

The crossing from Holyhead was cancelled twice that February, and by the third morning the only passengers left at the terminal were a lorry driver asleep in his cab, a woman with a crate of hens, and a grey lurcher-cross who belonged to nobody anyone could name. He sat beside the customs hut with his ears folded down, as if someone had tried to iron them flat and given up.

Sergeant Idris Vaughan, who had worked the gate for nineteen years and disliked animals on principle, brought him a sausage roll from the canteen. The dog swallowed it in one movement and then looked past Vaughan at the ferry, which rocked against its ropes with every light on, ready to go.
Each morning after that the dog came back. Vaughan started leaving a tin bowl by the bollard and told himself it was for the gulls. He learned that the animal liked to be addressed in a flat, official voice, so he read out the sailing times as though they were regulations, and that the dog thumped his tail twice whenever the word Dublin came up.
On the fourth day the wind dropped and the sailing went ahead. Vaughan watched the grey shape trot up the gangway between the lorries and disappear into the hold, then went back to his hut. Three weeks later a postcard arrived with a photograph of a harbour he did not recognise. On the back, in pencil pressed hard: Still getting the timetable read to him. He sends his regards. The sausage rolls are better over here.
