Two bow tattoos on the thighs

Fine line · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

The photograph is a close crop of a person's upper legs wearing black shorts. Two matching bow tattoos sit one on each thigh, drawn with dark outlines, loops and tails and some soft shading. The tattoos are in black ink and greys, and the plain background keeps the focus on the design.

The lock gates groaned shut behind the Marigold, and Nell Harrow wiped wet hands on her apron before reaching into the biscuit tin. Beneath a tangle of cotton reels and a broken hook lay the last two lengths of black silk ribbon her mother had bought in Reading the spring before she died. Her father had not asked for them. He had simply stopped hanging his cap on the nail beside the cabin door.

"Keep her steady against the wind off the water," he called from the towpath, lifting the bow line over a bollard. Nell went to the stern with the ribbon looped over her wrist. The canal below was the colour of strong tea and full of slow willow reflections. She made the first bow the way her mother had, two loops drawn tight and the tails left long enough to lift in a breeze, and knotted it to the brass cleat where the stern line ran.

The second bow she tied to the hook of the cabin lamp. Then she waited, because her mother had always left one small thing out of place and watched to see who noticed. He came aboard at Hanwell, crossed the cabin in three strides and stopped dead on the mat. For a long while he said nothing. Then he lifted his cap from the table, turned it in his hands, and set it on his head.

Nell took the tiller. The tails of both bows stirred as the barge slid under the bridge, dark loops fore and aft, keeping time with the wake all the way to Brentford.
