Three origami cranes on a thigh
Fine line · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
Three origami-style paper cranes are stacked down a thin diagonal stem, each drawn with delicate hatched linework and light shading. The tattoo sits on the outer thigh of a bare leg, photographed against a plain white background. The ink is dark grey to black, and the composition is simple and centred on the design.

You learn the first fold on the kitchen table at Hollin Farm, with the wireless turned low and the range ticking as it cools. Your grandmother pins a square cut from an old seed catalogue flat with the salt cellar and says a crane is only a sheet of paper that has decided to be something else. Outside, the ewes are coming down off the top field in a grey line, and the snow has already filled the ruts of the lane to the road.

By February the lambing shed smells of iodine and wet straw, and you are the one who sits up with the cold ones. You fold between checks, wings tucked, neck pinched to a point, and hang each bird on a length of green twine from the beam above the feed bin. Three go up that winter. The first is for the ewe that did not stand. The second is for the lane, which the council will not grit. The third you make badly, with your gloves still on, because the post has come and the letter with the bank's crest is folded in your apron pocket.
In the morning you take the twine down and carry the three birds out past the gate into the white field. The wind lifts them one after another and sets them on the top wire of the fence, three small grey shapes that could still pass for birds if you squint at them from the road.
