Two bucks forming a heart with Forever Together
Black and grey · Flash
A solid black silhouette design showing two buck deer heads facing each other, with their antlers and necks curving to form the outline of a heart. The words Forever Together are written in a flowing script along the lower edge of the heart. The linework is bold and filled, with no shading, and the composition is centred on a plain white background.

The rain has got into the gallery again, Harold, so I've spent the afternoon with a tin of linseed and your father's old brushes, sorting the backboard for Saturday's fair at Shipley Green.

You'll laugh, but the two bucks are the only thing the wind couldn't shift. Your dad cut them from ply the summer before he went off with the Pennine circus, and he set their heads so that when the lamps were lit they looked at each other across the gap. Folk on the ride line used to say the antlers made a heart if you stood at the far end with a pint in your hand. I never believed it until last night, when the generator coughed and I stood back with the torch and there it was, black against the tarpaulin.
The lettering along the bottom has nearly gone, so I've gone over it in the good enamel, the joined-up hand your mother taught us both at the kitchen table. Forever together, it says, though the paint makes it smaller than I'd like. Mr Dyson from the cake stall came by and asked why I bother with a shooting gallery nobody plays anymore. I told him some things get kept because they're worth the trouble.
Come home by Friday. The pellets are counted, the bell's been oiled, and I've left the gap between the two bucks exactly the width of your hand, so you can see where to put yours. Love, Peg.
