Mags Doherty had been waiting nine minutes for the ferry to stop rocking when Dev Kowalczyk raised his fist, the way he did when a punch was coming. They stood on the slipway at Inchmurrin with a cardboard box of Fizzy Lemon crates between them, and the gulls were making their usual racket over the bins.

"You owe me a bag of chips," Mags said. "And a star."

Dev pulled a tin star from his jacket pocket, one he'd cut from a biscuit lid, and pinned it to his chest as if it were a medal. "Stars are for winners."

She laughed, which was her mistake. He lunged, she ducked, and the box split open. Lemon crates tumbled down the slipway and bounced toward the water like they had somewhere better to be. Behind them the striped awning of the sweet shop flapped in the wind, orange and red, the same colours as the bunting that had hung since the regatta.

They spent the afternoon fishing crates out with a boathook, soaked to the elbow and not speaking. Near five the ferry horn sounded, and Dev held out his fist. Mags looked at it for a long moment, then bumped it with her own, and the tin star slipped off his jacket and sank without a sound.
