Pink pigtailed cartoon girl and fuzzy friend on a calf
Calf · Colour · Photo
A cartoon girl with pink hair in pigtails tied with yellow bows sits on the back of a round, fuzzy pink creature with a red nose. Smiley stars, a stack of ice cream scoops and a small green character sit around the figures, and the rainbow-striped clothing and boots are shaded with bold black outlines. The bright, saturated colour fills the design evenly against pale skin, and the composition is centred on the calf.

Ivy Pask had painted eleven thousand red noses before the Thursday the line finally went quiet. The toy works on Coldharbour Road had made soft animals for shops that no longer existed, and the last order was for a fuzzy pink creature with a button nose, a curl of rainbow sock on each foot, and a face that looked faintly surprised to be alive. Ivy's job was the cheeks. Two dabs of rose, a breath, then the next one.

The girl doll belonged to another department. Roy painted her, a man who hummed Motown while he worked and gave every star a little smile with one stroke of black. He had left a stack of plastic ice cream scoops on the bench the afternoon before, because someone upstairs said the range needed a snack. Nobody wanted to bin them. Ivy took the spare creature home that night, wrapped in a tea towel inside her coat, and set it on the windowsill of her flat above the launderette.
On the final Friday, Roy came down to the packing room with his jar of outliner and asked if she wanted to see the girl finished. She had pigtails the colour of bubblegum and bows he insisted were yellow, not gold, because gold was for Christmas. "She's meant to be riding something," he said, turning the sample in his big hands. "Nobody ever told me what." Ivy said nothing. She only tilted her head towards her coat pocket.
That evening she carried the girl home and set her astride the fuzzy pink back on the sill, and the two of them fitted as if they had been waiting. Now the steam from the launderette drifts past the glass each morning, and the sun turns the pair the colour of boiled sweets.
