Two cartoon characters in a heart frame

Traditional · Other · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows two cartoon characters side by side inside a heart-shaped frame. One has blue skin and dark hair, and the other has long pink hair and wears a gold crown. Pink and red flowers sit along the bottom of the design. Bold black outlines and flat, solid fills give it a traditional look, with bright colour dominating the piece.

Dear Ottilie,

You will not believe what the Sugar Court has done with the east tower. Her Radiance has had every window painted pink, and she has ordered the gardeners to plant rose bushes that bloom at midnight so that she can count the petals before breakfast. I told her the petals are already counted. She said that was exactly the sort of remark a clerk makes when he has no imagination.

Last Thursday a girl came up through the cellar grate with a bass guitar strapped to her back, its case scraped down to bare wood. She was blue as a bruise in the lamplight, with hair black as the bottom of a well, and she hovered a hand's width above the flagstones as though the floor had not quite been consulted. She asked for the queen by name, which nobody does, and then sat down and played a song so slow that the candles leaned toward her. Her Radiance came down in her gold crown and stood at the foot of the stairs with her hands clasped and her eyes shut, humming along badly, in a key that made the jam jars rattle.

They argued for an hour about who had borrowed whose sweater in the spring. I wrote none of it down. By dawn the girl had gone, and on the ledger page for the month lay a single pink flower pressed flat, with a note in a hand I did not know: Keep the cellar grate open. Some of us are only visiting.

I have left the grate open. The queen says it is the most sensible thing I have ever done. Write soon, and tell me whether you still owe me four shillings.

Yours in ink, Bartholomew
