Stitched cat with heart balloon on upper arm
Neo-trad · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A purple, stitched cat character wears a heart eyepatch and a polka-dot bow with a small skull, and a grey mouse with crossed eyes sits in front of it. A red heart balloon floats at the left edge, and a pink cotton candy on a stick is held at the right. Bold outlines and solid colour fills in teal, yellow, pink and purple dominate the design against plain skin.

Dear Ned,

Mum finally finished the cat, though it cost her three winters and most of Grandad's Sunday waistcoat. One ear is patchwork, the eyes are two buttons, and the left one is covered by a heart she cut from the Valentine's tablecloth. She says a cat that has seen what Hettie has seen ought to have a bit of mystery about it. I said she looks like she's been up all night on the sugar, which is more or less true, because Mr Oakes paid us in candy floss again this week when the takings went soft in the rain.
The mouse is Pennywhistle, of course. He sleeps in the cupboard under the spinning machine and goes cross-eyed every time someone blows a whistle on the Big Wheel. Mum stitched his eyes shut with black thread so he'd stop looking so worried, but he still ends up on the cat's lap every evening with his paws tucked under him like he owns the place. The heart balloon came off the stall the Tuesday the wind got up off the harbour, and Hettie caught the string with her tail before it could sail over the car park. We've tied it there ever since, so the cat keeps the balloon and the balloon keeps the cat.
I've put Hettie on the sill of the van, facing the water, with the candy floss held up like a torch. Mum says it's for the men coming in off the boats, so they know the fair is still open. I think it's really for you. The bow still has that little skull on it, the one you sewed on the night before you left, and every time the sun catches it I look over to see if you've come up the road.
Come home soon, or at least write back. The cat is waiting, and so am I.
