Two cartoon portraits in gold frames on thighs

Thigh · Colour · Photo

Two framed cartoon portraits sit side by side on the outer thighs of a person whose torso is cropped by a black top. The left figure has brown hair, round glasses and a green jacket, while the right has a black bob covering one eye and a red jacket. Bold outlines and flat colour fill the figures, with ornate gold scrollwork frames around each.

The rain had found the gap in the awning again, and Dot Harrow tilted a bin bag over her stall of gilt frames before the water could reach the mirrors. Across the aisle the fishmonger was shouting prices nobody could hear. Tucked inside her coat was the envelope from Nell, the one that had come with two sketches and no note.

Nell had drawn them at the kitchen table in October, on the backs of unpaid bills. One girl wore round spectacles and a green coat buttoned to the chin. The other had a black fringe hanging over one eye and a red jacket she never zipped. Dot had framed them in the cheapest gilt she could find, two oval frames with scrolls that curled like cut ribbon, and had hung them on the stall where they had sat unsold for a month. Nell had said to keep them until one of them asked for her back.

On Saturday the rain came sideways and a man in a flat cap stopped to look. He wanted one for his daughter, he said, the green one, and would Dot sell it on its own. She looked at the scrollwork she had gilded by hand and said the pair went together or not at all. He laughed and walked on. She stood a while listening to the rain drum on the canvas.

Nell came at four, soaked through, her hood dripping and a carrier bag of odd buttons swinging from one wrist. She didn't say anything. She lifted the red-jacketed frame off its hook and held it to her chest, then took the green one too, and the two of them stood in the wet while the frames knocked together as if they had somewhere to be.
