Elsa and Ariel framed portraits on thighs
Neo-trad · Thigh · Colour · Photo
Two oval-framed scenes sit side by side on the thighs. The left shows Elsa in a blue, snowy landscape with an ice castle, snowflakes and a snowflake crown above the frame, while the right shows Ariel seated on a rock beside a sunken castle, with a shell crest above and a green tail. Both use bold outlines, soft shading and rich colour within decorative gold-brown frames.

Hannah had kept the two frames in the boot of her car for eleven years, wrapped in a beach towel that still smelled of sun cream, and she had not decided what to do with them until the reunion invitation came through the letterbox. The function room at the Royal Oak in Halifax had the same swirly carpet. Nobody under forty recognised the DJ, and the buffet was sausage rolls cut into triangles.

Lottie found her by the coat rack. "You've brought something," she said, eyeing the carrier bag. "You always brought something. Remember the Tuesday you turned up with a rabbit?"
Hannah set the bag on a trestle table and unwrapped the towel. Inside were two oval frames, their gilt gone brown at the edges, and in each one a painting she had made at sixteen on the back of a cereal box lid. On the left, a castle of ice stood under a sky that was too blue, a snowflake the size of a dinner plate drifting over the glass. On the right, a sunken palace leaned above a grey rock, and a girl with red hair sat on it, her green tail curled under her, looking up at the surface as if it owed her money.
"You kept those," Lottie said.
"You kept the other half." Hannah had seen Lottie's name on the reunion list and gone straight to the loft.
Lottie laughed and lifted the sea frame. For a moment the two of them stood in the noise of the room, holding a winter and a shipwreck between them, neither willing to be the first to put hers down.
