Mermaid tattoo on a calf

Neo-trad · Calf · Colour · Photo

A cartoon mermaid with black hair, pink cheeks and closed eyes sits within a pale blue scaled tail, with red fin details and small black splatter dots around the figure. Bold black outlines define the shapes, with flat areas of blue, pink and red and some soft shading on the tail. The design is centred on a bare lower leg against a stone step and a grey wall.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The ward goes soft around three in the morning, when the drips stop ticking and the only sound is Mr Pell snoring in Bay C like a badly tuned boat. I do my rounds with a torch in my teeth and a cold cup of tea balanced on the trolley, and I always stop at Bed Six, where Kieran keeps his drawings taped to the locker door.

Kieran is nine and has been in since Tuesday with a broken wrist from falling off a trampoline. His favourite is a mermaid he drew in fat black felt-tip, all curls and a tail the colour of a February sky, with red flicks at the fins and little black dots he calls sea spray. Tonight he's asleep with his good arm flung over the blanket, and the mermaid has come loose from the locker door and slid down onto the windowsill, where she sits with her eyes shut and her cheeks pink, looking as tired as I feel.

I know it was him. Kieran swears he didn't touch her, and Beryl, the night sister, says children and old drawings have their own ideas. I tuck the paper back on its tape and spot a second mermaid on the reverse, drawn in biro, smaller and rougher, with a clipboard in her hand and a mug beside her tail. Underneath, in careful capitals, it says FOR THE NIGHT NURSE. DON'T WAKE HER.

I sit down at the desk to finish my notes and, for one minute, I let my eyes close too. When I open them the sky over the car park has started to lighten, and the mermaid on the windowsill is exactly where I left her, still dreaming of somewhere with more water.
