Ruth had the cows in by four, as she always did, and she stood at the gate with her spectacles fogged while her sister Maud argued with the kettle. The hill farm had been quiet since Boxing Day. Snow lay in the lee of the walls and the light went off the valley before teatime.

"The sun won't clear Gallow Brow before February," Maud said, carrying two cups out into the yard as if daring the weather. "Dad said so."

"Dad said a lot of things. He said the ewes would lamb in the barn." Ruth took her cup and looked at the old boundary rope where it ran up the slope, frayed white with frost. "He also said the hawthorn would bloom in March. It didn't."

Maud laughed, which she rarely did, and they both looked up at the ridge. Something orange showed at its lip, thin as wire, then wider. The light came across the snow in rays, cream and gold, and the green of the lower pasture rose out of the grey as if it had been waiting underneath all along.

Maud found the first flower of the year under the hurdles, an orange bloom with its petals still stiff from the cold, and she pinned it to the front of Ruth's green coat without saying anything. Ruth did not thank her. They stood at the gate with their cups going cold until the light reached the walls, and the sun came up over Gallow Brow exactly when their father had said it wouldn't.
