They had come out of a burnt-out Chevy beside the road outside Beatty, both of them, and neither would let me take one without the other.

Nobody picks up hitchhikers on the Tonopah road any more, so I figured cats were safe enough. Ruth at the diner in Goldfield had told me the pair belonged to nobody, only to the old mine shafts and the wind. She laughed when I said I was taking them as far as Reno. 'They'll sort it out,' she said. 'They always do.' I didn't know what she meant until the afternoon the thermometer on my wing mirror read a hundred and twelve, and the grey one climbed over the seat, curled round the orange one's back and pressed his nose into hers like he was trying to keep a secret.

At Tonopah I pulled into the diner lot at dusk. I meant to leave the windows down while I fetched fuel and a bowl of water. When I came back they had shifted onto the passenger seat and were asleep nose to nose, a small warm knot of fur and breath, the neon from the sign turning their coats the colour of old pennies. I sat behind the wheel with the engine ticking for a long time before I could bring myself to open the door.
