Two cats on a branch with heart tails
Black and grey · Flash
The image shows two cats seen from behind, sitting side by side on a thin, tapering branch. Their tails loop down and join to form an outlined heart below the branch. The design is a flat, solid silhouette with no interior shading, in dark grey on an off-white background.

Mab had counted the branches of the old ash twice before she noticed the cats had moved. "Those are the Pollard sisters' cats," said her brother from the gate. "Been there since Lent."
"They're not anyone's cats. Nobody owns them." She shaded her eyes. Their tails hung down over the bark and, where they met, had knotted themselves into a loop with a point at the bottom, the way a child draws a heart before anyone has taught it the shape.
Mab had lost her husband to the river in March and had not spoken of it since. She climbed the wall with a dish of fish heads and set it on the stones. The cats did not look round. Then the nearer one lifted its tail and let the knot slacken, and Mab watched the heart come undone and remake itself, neat as a stitch. She sat on the wall until dusk, and when she walked home the lane seemed lighter, though she could not have said why. In the morning the dish was empty and two grey shapes were still on the branch, closer now, their tails looped together over the water.
