Nobody in Harrow Lane could remember which of them had started it, only that by the spring of 1953 the black tom from the chandler's and the white queen from the bakery were never seen apart. At dusk they walked the length of the lane side by side, tails lifted and knotted at the tips like a pair of hands held over a gate. Mr Okonedo at the post office said it was courtship. Mrs Brandt at number nine said it was a dare that had gone on too long.

The children called them Dark and Light, as if they were a pair of lamps. Whenever the bakery door opened, Lily slipped out first and waited under the awning until Soot came hurrying round the corner, his tail still bent towards hers. Nobody ever saw them quarrel. When the coal cart came through in February and Soot was carried off in a sack by the carter's boy, Lily sat on the step for three days and would not touch her saucer.

On the fourth morning Soot was back, thinner, with a scrap of blue twine still caught in his fur. The carter's boy, Tom Wade, confessed to the baker's wife that he had only meant to borrow him for the afternoon. That evening the two of them walked the lane as they always had, and Lily's tail rose to meet his as though nothing had happened.

Mr Pryce, who lit the gas lamp at the top of the lane, stopped beneath it with his taper raised. He watched the two tails curl together into a loop against the last of the light, and he let the flame drop back into its tin without striking the lamp, so they could have the dusk a little longer.
