Dear Nell, the harbour master says the Mary Ann will not be out again until the wind backs round to the east, so I have a week of idleness and the cat has taken full charge of it. You will remember Biscuit from the winter, the ginger one who sat on the net drying frame and called out at the gulls. He has gone grey about the muzzle since, but his opinions are the same. This morning he found the one patch of sun on the wheelhouse step and lay down along the edge of it as though the boards had been laid for him alone.

I watched him for an hour with my tea going cold. He stretches out the whole length of himself, and his tail runs off the end of the step and curls back on itself like the last line of a signature. Old Tomas says cats sleep with one eye on the tide, but Biscuit has both eyes shut and a little drip of water hanging from his chin where he has been dozing with his mouth open. I did not have the heart to tell him he looked a fool. He looked content, which is more than I can say for the rest of us.

The skipper has promised the boat will be back on the slip by Friday, and I have promised Mrs Greaves I will mend her pots before the end of the month. I have promised a great many things this year, Nell, and I am beginning to think the cat is the only one of us who has kept his word. When I go out on the morning tide I shall leave him the step, and he will leave me the tail to find my way home by.
