Rooster and pig on a pair of feet
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
Two bare feet are shown side by side, each carrying a line tattoo of an animal. The left foot has a rooster with a raised tail and a head angled down, and the right foot has a pig shown head down in profile. The tattoos use single black outlines with little or no shading, and the skin tone and dark, reflective surface behind the feet keep the focus on the linework.

The barge Tansy Mae had carried coal up the Trent for thirty years, and in all that time nobody had ever moved her faster than the rooster on the bow-rope. Old Harrow Dell kept him in a crate under the tiller, a red-combed bird who crowed at the lock-keepers and bit the ankles of anyone who tried to steal his corn. When the ice came early that winter, the family had to unload at Gunness with the water half-frozen and the pig still aboard, a grey sow named Mercy who had never once set hoof on dry land without complaint.

Mercy would not walk the plank. She sat down on the wet boards and looked at the frozen bank as though it had insulted her mother. Harrow swore, the children wept, and the rooster flapped up onto the gunwale and stared down at the sow with his tail spread like a sail. Then he dropped his head and went at the ice with his beak, pecking one crack after another until the water came welling up black and clear. Mercy grunted, rooted along the edge where the bird had worked, and trotted onto the bank as if the whole business had been her idea.
They say the barge went down in the spring flood with nobody aboard, and that the two animals were seen the following summer on the towpath, the rooster riding on the sow's back and both of them pointing their heads at the water. Nobody in Gunness thought it strange. The sow was never wrong about ground, and the rooster never wrong about weather, and between them they had got the family out alive.
