Two elephants tattoo on the side ribs
Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A small outline tattoo shows two elephants side by side, one slightly smaller, with their trunks meeting. The linework is thin and even, in black ink with no shading. The tattoo sits on bare skin against a plain, softly lit background, with red fabric visible at the bottom edge of the frame.

Mind the windfalls, they'll turn your ankle before you've finished your cup. Sit on the low wall where the sun's still warm, and I'll tell you about the summer the travelling show lost its elephants in Walter Pike's orchard. Nobody in the village believed it until the lorry was seen on the Hereford road with its back doors hanging open and the Discovery apples half gone from every tree along the lane.

The big one was called Tobias, and he had the patience of a churchyard yew. The little one was Mab, and she was all knees and mischief. They'd pulled down three branches before Walter came out with his shotgun and his bad temper, and then Mab went through the ditch and stuck fast in the mud below the fence. Tobias wouldn't leave her. He stood over her all that hot afternoon, swaying his head, while the showmen shouted and hauled on ropes. Walter said later he'd never seen a beast so set on staying put. In the end Tobias reached his trunk through the wire, and Mab reached hers up to meet it, and the two of them stayed like that, tip to tip, until the mud gave her up.
The showman's daughter tied a red ribbon to the gatepost that evening, to say thank you, she said, though nobody asked her to. They stayed the week under the cider barn, and every morning the big one leaned against the little one as if he were holding up a wall. When the show finally rolled away, Walter found the ribbon had faded to pink in the sun, and he left it where it was.
Look at the gatepost now. The wood's worn smooth at about the height of a trunk's tip, and the wasps won't settle there. Pass me that jug, would you. Mind the wasps, they're after the cider too.
