Two small elephants on the ribs

Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A small fine line tattoo shows two elephants facing each other with their trunks curled together to form a heart shape between them. The linework is thin and uniform in black ink, with simple outlines and no shading, and the design sits on bare skin with a warm, soft-focus background. The composition is close and centred, with the tattoo placed on the side of the ribs.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The elephants had been carrying the same bucket of water between them since the drought began, one trunk looped over the handle and the other curled around the rim, and by the third week of it Ottoline Marsh had stopped pretending the arrangement was sensible. She stood at the gate of the allotment in her wellingtons and watched the two of them come up the lane from the reservoir, grey and slow, their ears flapping like old sheets on a line. Mr Abernathy from the next plot had sold them to the Carbery sisters a decade back, and nobody had ever quite explained why they were still so fond of one another.

The runner beans had gone to brown paper. The courgettes lay flat as dropped gloves. Only the sunflowers along the fence stood tall, which Ottoline suspected was spite. When the elephants reached the cabbages they stopped, and the smaller one, the one called Bramble, lifted her trunk and touched the tip of her companion's trunk, and the two of them made a little curl in the air that anybody could have mistaken for a heart if they were looking for one.

Ottoline had been looking for one for thirty-one years. She fetched a tin mug from the potting shed, filled it at the standpipe, and carried it over with both hands so it would not spill. Bramble drank first. The other one waited, then drank, and neither of them stepped back to let the other go first, which was, Ottoline thought, the whole secret of a good marriage and the whole reason the cabbages were still standing.
