Cartoon manatee and heart on the lower back

Fine line · Back · Mixed · Photo

A small cartoon manatee is drawn in a thin blue outline, facing left, with a tiny red heart floating above its head. Red marks along its side add colour to the body, while the rest of the design is left as open line work. The tattoo sits on pale skin against a gold waistband, with the photo taken at a close angle.

The manatee came up the slipway at five, the same hour the bread went in, and nosed the scullery door until I opened it. Nobody on the Brightwater Lass had ever seen a sea cow leave the water on purpose, but she didn't seem to think she was doing anything peculiar. She shuffled across the wet flags like a tired aunt and settled herself under the steel table, where the warmth from the range came up through the grating.

I fed her the bruised outer leaves from the greens crate, and she took them from my fingers with a delicacy that embarrassed the second mate. Mr Pascoe wanted her gone before the harbourmaster came aboard. I told him she was no trouble, which was a lie only by a little. She ate four cabbages a morning and left a trail of brine across my clean floor, and every night I swept it up feeling as though I'd been given a small, damp secret.

On the last morning the ship was casting off for Lisbon, and I found her at the bottom of the gangway, blinking at the tide. I had wrapped a crust of Sunday loaf in greaseproof paper. When I held it out she tipped her head sideways and touched the paper with her snout, very gently, then turned and slid back into the harbour without another look.

That night the porthole fogged with my breath while I washed the pans. I drew a heart in the condensation with one finger, the way a deckhand had once done for a girl on the quay, and watched it run down the glass. Out past the breakwater something large rolled over and went under, and I didn't go up on deck to look. I knew where she had gone.
