Two cats curled together on a shoulder blade
Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A single-line tattoo shows two cartoon cats with simple round heads, small dot eyes and whisker marks, one lying over the other. The linework is thin and even, in black ink with no shading, and the design sits small and centred on the upper back beside the shoulder blade. The skin is pale and the image is in black and white.

Pepper was the thin one who had arrived on a lorry of cabbages and never left.

Every morning they fought for the warm corner, and every morning the corner won. Biscuit would stretch across it, all four paws and a yawn, while Pepper sat in the wet at the edge looking offended. Mrs Heddle had given up telling them apart by temperament. She told them apart by their tails. Pepper's curled up like a question mark. Biscuit's trailed off behind her like a dropped scarf.
Then came the Thursday the wind took the awning off the fish stall two rows down, and the whole market ran for cover. Pepper bolted under the crate. Biscuit followed, complaining in cat. When the gusts dropped, Mrs Heddle lifted the tarpaulin and found them asleep in one tangle, Biscuit's head tucked under Pepper's chin, both tails looped round the same knot of wet rope.
She left them there and sold buttons to nobody, which felt, that afternoon, like the best trade she had ever made.
