The lift shudders on its cable and the lamps in the shaft go out one by one, so you do what the wardens taught you and turn your back to her. Her shoulder finds yours through the plates of your armour, the same cold weight it has carried since the Quiet Years, and neither of you speaks. Above you the surface of Halden Reach is burning orange under the ash clouds, and somewhere up there the last transport waits with its hatch open for one passenger.

The oath is older than either of you. Back to back, facing outward, so that nothing can come at one of you unseen. Her hand drifts to the silver thread at her collar, the one her sister stitched before the tithe ships took the orchard boats. The council has asked you to carry the seal-key out of the city. Nobody has asked her for anything, and she has never once asked for herself.

The doors grind open on the sub-level, and the seed-vaults ahead glow a patient blue, row after row of glass lungs breathing slowly in the dark. You step through first, because that was always the arrangement. Behind you she sets her palm flat against the frame, the way the ferry-clerks used to chalk their blessings on departing gates.

"Keep the light," she says.

You do not turn around. You lift the key in your fist so she can see it catch the blue. "Keep your back to the door," you answer, "and I will come back up that shaft for you."
