Two framed portraits on forearms

Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Two side-by-side tattoos on the inner forearms show a man in a suit and tie with a moustache and a woman with long dark hair, each set inside an ornate scrolled frame. The portraits use fine shading and soft tonal gradients to render skin, hair and clothing. The image is shown in black and grey ink against pale skin, with the two frames mirroring each other across the photo.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mrs Pryce had asked two hundred pounds for the pair and Leonard Hask had offered forty, because the frames were the only part of them worth anything. He turned the left one over under the shop bulb. Someone had written on the back in pencil, Gerald and Hester, 1931, in a hand that had plainly never met either sitter. The man had a moustache trimmed like a hedge and a stare that followed you to the counter.

Leonard hung them on the back room wall because there was nowhere else. Nobody came for them. Trade was mostly wireless sets and a bicycle with a buckled spoke. Each evening he noticed the pair had shifted a fraction, the man leaning a little toward the woman, her chin settling against the top of her scrolled frame. He told himself the damp was doing it.

On a Thursday in March both frames hung perfectly level, and the man's tie had been retied in a different knot. Leonard sold the bicycle the following week to a boy from the Co-op. That night, when he counted the till, there was a half-crown lying face up on the tray, dry as a bone, and nobody in the shop but him.

He took the portraits down the next morning and wrapped them in brown paper. Before he could tie the string he saw the woman had turned her face toward the wall, and the man was looking at the door, as if waiting for someone to come back for them.
