Two hands and string on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows two open hands, one at each side, with a web of straight lines stretched between them in a cat's cradle style. The linework is thin and even, in solid black ink with no shading. The design is centred on the forearm against plain pale skin, with a dark wooden surface in the background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mrs Okafor had sold wool off the same trestle on Hallam Street for thirty years, and in the rain she let the awning sag until the water pooled in its middle and ran off in one long rope. Danny, her nephew, was meant to be counting skeins. Instead he sat on an upturned crate with a loop of red string around his fingers, trying to remember the sequence she had shown him that morning.

"Hands out," she said, without looking up from her ledger. "Not like that. Thumb under, the way a bridge sits."

He tried. The string slipped and the whole web collapsed into a tangle over his knuckles. Rain drummed on the tarpaulin. Across the lane the fishmonger shouted prices that nobody could hear over the gutters. She set down her pencil, took his hands in hers, quick and cool, and lifted the string so the lines crossed in the middle and stretched wide between his palms.

"Everything holds if the pull is even," she said. "Lean on one side and the whole thing folds."

Danny looked at the diamond of thread between them and saw that it was not a tangle at all but a shape that had been waiting for him to stop fidgeting. He pulled gently, and the centre opened like a small window onto the grey street. She pressed the loop into his palm and closed his fingers over it. "Keep that. Someone will come asking how it goes, and you will need two hands to show them."
