Single line wave on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A single continuous black line forms a simple wave crest that runs horizontally across a pale forearm. The linework is thin and even, with no shading or fill, so the design rests entirely on the contour. The plain light skin and dark background keep the tattoo as the focal point, with a patterned garment edge visible at the left.

The dough had to rest by four, so I was already at the bench when the tide turned under the harbour wall, and I heard it before I saw any light. The ovens ticked as they warmed. Outside, the gulls were still asleep on the slipway, and the only other sound was the scrape of my knife on the wooden board.

Auntie Vera ran this bakery for forty years and never once wrote an order down. What she did instead was draw on the marble before the first batch went in. She would dust a little flour across the stone and, without lifting her hand, run one line across it, rising to a curl and then falling back flat. She called it the swell. If the line came out clean, the boats would be back by noon. If she had to go over it twice, she stayed at the window until the men came in.
She has been gone since March, and the marble has been wiped clean a hundred times since. This morning I dusted the flour, set my hand down, and found I could not manage it. My line stalled, lifted, started again. It looked like a mistake, so I tried once more, and once more, until the stone was grey with trying.
Then I stopped and remembered what she had told me: never lift the hand. I let the flour go, kept the one curving stroke I had managed, and went back to the loaves. When the first tray came out, the crust had split along the top in a single long score, rising at one end and sinking at the other. Out past the wall the sea had gone the colour of pewter, and the first boat was coming in on it.
